What is ViuTour? A live translation system for guided tours

ViuTour is a simultaneous translation service for guided tours.

The guide speaks using their phone and a microphone, and every visitor listens on their own phone, with headphones, to the original audio or a translation into the language they choose, out of 60 languages. Visitors join by scanning a QR code, with no app to install and no account.

Listen. Understand. Live it.

Some stories deserve
to reach everyone.

A street, a monument, an anecdote only you can tell. You bring the voice. ViuTour lets the whole group follow it, each in their own language.

A group with visitors speaking two or three languages no longer means a second guide, audio guides or saying no. One voice, the guide’s, and every visitor hears it on their phone in the language they understand.

Because a good tour is remembered for what you lived.

THE GUIDE’S VOICE

You talk.

Start the tour and speak naturally. Your voice is the thread that connects the whole group.

02

ONE QR CODE. THEIR PHONE.

They scan. They’re in.

Each visitor opens the QR code on their phone, plugs in their headphones and chooses how to listen. No accounts, no installs.

A SHARED EXPERIENCE

Everyone lives it.

The same tour, shared. Some listen to the original audio. Others, to the translation in their language.

Shall we try it with your group?

Each visitor only needs an internet connection and headphones.

03 / Original audio or translation, on each visitor’s phone

The same moment.
Your language.

Those who understand the original voice hear it as it is. Those who need a translation get it on the same phone. Everyone is part of the tour.

05 / Frequently asked questions about live translation on guided tours

Frequently asked
questions.
Got another question?
01What if visitors speak the same language as the guide?

They can listen to the original voice directly through their headphones. Original audio is included in every plan and doesn’t use language hours.

02Do I need to install an app or buy equipment?

Visitors join from their phone’s browser by scanning a QR code. They don’t need to install an app or create an account. Each visitor needs headphones and an internet connection.

03Which languages are available?

Guides speak their own language. Translation is available in 60 languages: English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Japanese, Chinese and many more. Each visitor picks theirs when they join or during the tour: the six most common are shown at a glance and the rest can be found with a search box.

04Do I always have to book the same languages?

No. You can choose from the available languages on every tour: English today, French tomorrow, or several at once. You buy language hours, not a fixed set of languages.

05How exactly are the hours counted?

One hour with one translated language being listened to uses one language hour. Only the time with the microphone open and someone listening to that translation counts. Pausing the translation stops the counter. Simultaneous languages and groups add up; the number of listeners doesn’t multiply the hours.

06What happens if I run out of hours?

The tour carries on. Extra hours cost €5/h, and that month we charge whichever is cheaper: the extra hours or the next plan up. We never cut a tour short for lack of hours.

07Is there a minimum term?

No. Plans have no lock-in. Monthly hours don’t roll over, and any plan change you ask for applies from the following month.

08Which language can the guide speak?

English or Spanish, and they can switch between the two during the tour (companies working in Catalan guide in Catalan or Spanish). If you guide in another language, get in touch.

09What happens if part of the route has no coverage?

While a visitor’s phone has no connection, they won’t hear anything. When the signal returns, it reconnects on its own and, if they’ve fallen behind, the app offers to jump back to live; if the delay keeps growing, it does so automatically. Before your first tour, walk the route with your phone and check where there’s signal. In a cave or a basement with no coverage, give that part of the explanation before going in.

010How do visitors ask questions?

Each visitor can type a question in their own language on their phone. The guide receives it translated into their language, answers out loud, and the whole group hears the answer translated.

011Does the translation get place and people names right?

Proper names are the hardest part of any translation. That’s why each company has its own vocabulary: the names in its area and how they should sound in each language. We prepare it with you when you start, and you can add to it from your dashboard whenever a new term comes up.

012What if a visitor has no phone or headphones?

Without a phone they can’t follow the translation: if several visitors don’t carry one, a rented audio guide system is the better option. Without headphones they can hold the phone to their ear, though a pair is better; you can keep a few simple ones to hand out.

013Can people who understand the guide and people who need a translation listen at the same time?

Yes. Each visitor picks the original audio or a translation on their phone. Those on the original hear the guide’s voice live, untranslated, and that doesn’t use language hours.

014How does the free trial work?

Request it with the form. Once we activate it, you’ll get your username and password by email and can run it yourself: at home, with two phones and a pair of headphones, or straight away with a group. You have 48 hours to run up to 30 minutes of tours, in as many tours as you like, with up to two translated languages at a time (whichever the visitors pick). Once per company. We don’t ask for a credit card: you only pay if you then sign up for a plan.
